1. What's your type of art? The main genre and typology? And how did you get into it? How did you learn it and refined it?

 

My art is informal. During my studies at the Academy, which began in 2013, I gradually moved away from figuration because I felt it didn't provide me with adequate space for expression. Especially in the first few years, I experimented extensively with various materials and media. Eventually, I developed a preference for using oil paint, pigments, and resin as a finish for certain types of works, or cement for others.

Nevertheless, I believe that every artistic journey is constantly evolving, and I expect surprises to arise not only in terms of my research but also from a technical and practical standpoint.

 

2. When did you realize you were and artist? What's your education and background? Did you have interesting and related experiences or did you start from scratch and you are a self-taught artist? Describe it.

 

I was always a creative child, even back then I realized that I had unique ideas. My teachers often mentioned my creativity in school evaluations, and my art teacher in middle school specifically suggested that I attend an art high school due to my abilities. However, considering my inclination for studying, I followed other advice and ended up choosing a scientific high school, which, in fact, distanced me a lot from art.

Those years were tough; I studied extensively and had little room for creativity. Therefore, after that experience, I made the decision to move from Basilicata to Milan to study at the Brera Academy and finally unleash that suppressed desire to pursue art.

 

3. Someone said: doctors cure people and engineers build houses, artists don't. Do you think art is useful? Had it been? Will it be? And where do you consider yourself positioned in this? is there any role of art nowadays?

 

I believe that art is incredibly valuable, and every artist, based on their personal approach, has the ability to contribute something meaningful, whether it's healing the soul or provoking thought.

In my case, I aim to reflect on issues that ultimately impact everyone. When I delve into the Anthropocene, I am exploring the human presence in the geological age. It's a subject that involves us all. By examining various aspects of this overarching theme, I aspire, without excessive pretensions, to offer my perspective in the hope that it can positively influence the viewer. I firmly believe that art has a distinct role and is never an end in itself.

 

4. As an emergent artist, do you think you developed or achieved a style/ Savoir Faire? If so, describe it please. If not, are you trying to find it?

 

I am just shy of thirty years old, and while in other fields that may be considered young, in the realm of art, it's a different story, as you may know. However, over these years since I embarked on this artistic path, I can confidently say that I have faced numerous challenges and gained valuable experiences. Each experience has contributed to my growth and added a piece to my artistic development, especially through significant collaborations, artistic residencies, and engaging in various forms of artistic exchange.

Now, I have a clear sense of who I am as an artist and what my goals are. At the beginning of my journey, I encountered many difficulties, perhaps due to transitioning from a different field of study where I wasn't familiar with certain mechanisms. Particularly during my bachelor's degree, I dedicated considerable effort to self-reflection and personal growth. Now, when I am acknowledged for possessing a certain artistic maturity, it fills me with immense pride.

 

5. What's your environment? It can be family, relationship, school, work, etc. Describe your personal space, studio, room, creative space where you actually think and create.

 

It took me a considerable amount of time to find the right space. The creation of my artwork is merely the final phase of an extensive research process that precedes each of my individual works or cycles of works. These research stages involve reading, observation, and study, all of which I undertake in solitude to fully immerse myself in the process.

Living in a city, such as Milan, often means sharing unattractive and expensive spaces with individuals who may not necessarily relate to your artistic endeavors. After spending ten years in Milan, I made the decision to seek out the ideal space by returning to my roots, to my homeland in Basilicata. Finally, I have a studio that is spacious, well-lit, reasonably priced, and exclusively mine. It dawned on me that this choice was truly necessary. By the way, I extend an invitation to anyone reading this to visit my studio and explore Basilicata, a land that greatly influences my artistic production!

 

6. Do you think young artists needs a support like the platform ÆMERGENT? And how this must be done in order to make you develop your own experience as professional?

 

Indeed, I believe that young artists require opportunities, and ÆMERGENT provides a promising possibility. One of the factors that motivated me to join ÆMERGENT as an artist is the collaborative nature of the platform, coupled with the evident professionalism of the people involved. What I find particularly appealing is that the platform concentrates on supporting select artists, and in turn, these artists rely on ÆMERGENT. The outcome of this collaboration ultimately benefits both parties, but only after each has fulfilled their respective roles. A word of advice to those considering it.

 

7. What are you actually working on? Future projects?

 

Yes, I am currently working on future projects, and I have some exciting plans scheduled for September. However, I'm keeping the details under wraps for now.

 

8. To end this interview, choose your favorite work and talk about it. Can be the best on to describe you, your sensibility and methodology. The flagship one.

 

I'm not sure if it's my best work, but I strongly believe that the Sublime Artificial series, which I have been working on for several years, truly represents me as an artist. It's an ongoing cycle of works, continually evolving as I add new pieces. Currently, five of these works are available for sale here on ÆMERGENT. Through this series, I explore two significant themes that I find crucial: aesthetic anesthesia and the spectacle of the ugly.

One of the greatest challenges our society faces is the cultural and visual addiction to environmental phenomena, caused by the overwhelming influx of images in the modern world.

That's why I named this series Artificial Sublime, as it is based on constructing images inspired by anthropogenic landscapes that possess a captivating quality in reality. The final resin layer gives the works a reflective quality, incorporating the surrounding space and "compelling" the viewer to "reflect" and see themselves within the world of the Anthropocene. In doing so, they are prompted to contemplate their own existence as humans in this geological era.
